Right.  I've got a new hobby, it seems.  Well at least a new, old hobby.  I've been spontaneously going to see theatre productions.
So I thought it might be interesting to review them on my LJ.

Disclaimer: I'm not even going to pretend to be impartial.  What you're getting here is my opinion.  Nothing more or less.

I decided to go and see this play on a whim, not realising it was the directorial debut of a friend of mine, Amy Gunn.  When I bought my ticket, I was afraid I wouldn't know the play well enough.  I usually read synopses of operas or Shakespeare before I go to see them, just to make sure I don't get too lost.  I needn't have worried.  The actors and actresses made the story line sufficiently clear, and I had seen the play recently enough that I didn't get lost.

Most of the acting was good, some of it was great.  Notable were Shelley Firth who played an excellent Fool, Melissa Wilkins who played an animated and conniving Maria and Nathan Jeffers as Malvolio who did an outstanding job of stealing the show.  The twins (played by Glenn Moore and Rachel Nott) were very good, and looked very much alike (except, as mentioned in the program, the several inches of height difference)  Sir Toby Belch, played by Rob O'Connor and Sir Aguecheek played by Mark Chapman were a humourous and unlikely duo.  The rather punk Toby and the exceedingly camp Aguecheek made the relationship between the two characters very plain, in addition to being highly entertaining.

The staging of the show was well done.  The scene in which Malvolio reads the letter presented by the conspirators was especially well planned, with the conspirators hiding in the left and right balconies, which allowed for a very comic scene.  The opening scene with Rob Franklin as Orsino 'naked' in a bathtub was excellent for grabbing - and holding - the audience's attention.

The lighting was good, and conveyed mood well.  It was occasionally too little, which made the characters difficult to see.  The sound, on the other hand was very well done.  The actors could "snap" the music on and off from the stage, and every snap and music start and stop were timed perfectly.  It was like magic.

Overall, it was an excellent play, the actors and actresses all performed well, and the staging, lighting, and music all combined to make it a most enjoyable evening.  Congratulations and well done to all involved.  I look forward to seeing the next suTCo production next week, Sweeney Todd.

Overall: 4/5
Value for Money: 5/5
Recommendation: Well, I'd have told you to go see it if it were still on.  Should have thought of this last week.
